2023 .... 11 starters teed up in the Don Lane Invitational on October 8th and the 8 players through to Heckle Sunday's seeded match play rounds were 1st - Soldier Montgomerie (24 pts), 2nd - Hunter Meehan (20), 3rd - Seve Hemosteros (17), 4th - Dick Faldo (16), 5th - Grantief Goosen (16), 6th - Cavey Pavin (13), 7th - Notah Kelly (11) and 8th - Trent Strange (11).

Missing the cut were 9th Bourkie Baird (9 pts - 1st em), 10th Java Haas (8) and Tubby Waldorf (FTF).

Results from the first round of match play on October 15 were Match 1 - Trent Strange def. Soldier Montgomerie 1 up, Match 2 - Dick Faldo def. Grantief Goosen 1 up, Match 3 - Seve Hemosteros def. Cavey Pavin 1 up and Match 4 - Hunter Meehan def. Notah Kelly 5 & 4.

Friday's (October 20) semi-finals saw Match 5 - Dick Faldo def. Trent Strange 7 & 6 and Match 6 - Hunter Meehan def. Seve Hemosteros 1 up.

In Match 7, the Championship Match, Dick Faldo, conceding an improbable three shots to Hunter Meehan, the Cronulla Golf Club legend, burst out of the clubhouse bar to win the first 4 holes and set up a lead he never surrendered.  The warm conditions and a plentiful supply of hydration product certainly ate into that early advantage, whittled down to 1 up after 16.  Unfortunately for the large gallery, Hunter's out of bounds drive on 17 certainly put a rather large dent in his challenge, losing the hole to hand The People's Prince a 2 & 1 victory and a second Match Play title.

2022 .... With the club standing down a number of players who aligned themselves with the Saudi-backed rebel LIV tour, 8 starters teed up for a chance to win the coveted Stephen Angry Anderson trophy.

Results from the first round of match play on October 16 were Match 1 - Trent Strange def. Soldier Montgomerie 1 up, Match 2 - Soldier Montgomerie def. Tubby Waldorf 4 & 3, Match 3 - Grantief Goosen def. Karrie White 1 up and Match 4 - Davidson Love def. Seve Hemosteros 2 & 1.

Friday's (October 21) semi-finals saw Match 5 - Java Haas def. Soldier Montgomerie 5 & 4 and Match 6 - Davidson Love def. Grantief Goosen 10 & 8.

Match 7, the Championship Match, saw Davidson Love (+8) def. Java Haas 1 up.  Both finalists will have much to regret, obviously Java more so, especially with his tee shot on 18.  After conceding and then absorbing the 8 strokes difference to be all square as they stepped onto the last tee, it was a cruel finish to an intriguing final.  As the large crowd of 5 spectators watched on, Davo put his tee shot on the dance floor at 18 and just had to await the inevitable concession.

Results from the first round of match play on October 24 were Match 1 - Tubby Waldorf def. Garry Mize 4 & 2, Match 2 - Seve Hemosteros def. Bourkie Baird 4 & 3, Match 3 - Boo Boo Weekley def. Danny White Shark 4 & 2 and Match 4 - Karrie White def. Soldier Montgomerie 5 & 4.

Midweek (Octoner 27) semi-final results were Match 5 - Seve Hemosteros def. Tubby Waldorf 3 & 2 and Match 6 - Boo Boo Weekley def. Karrie White 7 & 5.

Match 7 Championship Match - Boo Boo Weekley def. Seve Hemosteros 4 & 3.  Able to match Hemosteros for distance off the tee, Boo Boo's 12 shot advantage proved too big an obstacle for the gallant runner-up to overcome.  Boo Boo's game was solid and strongly assisted by some great scramble when under pressure including a 'Larry Mize' moment when he chipped in from off the green on the 13th as well as draining a few critical, long distance putts.

2020 .... 22 starters teed up in the Don Lane Invitational (November 4) seeking one of the eight spots available for the Match Play Championship.  Through to the next round were 1st Edwardo Romero (27pts), 2nd Java Haas (26), 3rd Tubby Waldorf (24), 4th Thongchai JD (24), 5th Danny White Shark (23), 6th Karrie White (23), 7th Berman DeChambeau (21) and 8th Notah Kelly (21).

Missing the cut were 9th Notah Kelly (82 net), 10th Muzzy Zoeller (83), 11th Ken Crenshaw (84), 12th Berman DeChambeau (84), 13th Bluey Dunk (84), 14th Dick Faldo (85), 15th Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson (85), 16th Davidson Love (87), 17th Lewis Oosthuizen (89) and 22nd Edwardo Romero (90).

Results from the first round of match play on October 24 were Match 1 - Edwardo Romero def. Notah Kelly on concession at 17th hole, Match 2 - Thongchai JD def. Danny White Shark 3 & 2, Match 3 - Tubby Waldorf def. Karrie White 2 up and Match 4 - Berman DeChambeau def. Java Haas 7 & 5.

Midweek semi-final results were Match 5 - Edwardo Romero def. Thongchai JD 6 & 5 and Match 6 - Tubby Waldorf def. Berman DeChambeau 2 up.

Match 7 Championship Match - Edwardo Romero def. Tubby Waldorf 3 & 1.  In a compelling final match, with Edwardo Romero (aka The Prince) giving away 9 shots, he was par after 5 holes, 4 up and obviously on fire.  The regal flame cooled somewhat and Waldorf impressively fought back to be square after 10 holes, at which point a prominent mock said this could be the biggest collapse since Lehman Brothers went belly up during the GFC.

Romero found his golf groove again shortly after and won 3 holes between the 14th and 17th, including a birdie on the par 4 16th, to claim the title.  He dedicated his win to Adam 'Mad Dog' MacDougall and The Man Shakes program.

2019 .... 21 starters teed up in the Wealth Partners sponsored Don Lane Invitational with 17 of those seeking one of the eight spots available for the Match Play Championship.  Results were 1st A Edwardo Romero (70 net), 2nd Java Haas, 3rd B Boo Boo Weekley and 4th Tubby Waldorf (74), 5th Notah Kelly (77), 6th Davidson Love and 7th Garry Mize (78), 8th Danny White Shark (79), 9th Hunter Meehan and 10th Grantief Goosen (80), 11th Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson and 12th Peard Fulke (81), 13th B Bill Mickelson (82), 14th Bourkie Baird and 15th Seve Hemosteros (83), 16th Soldier Montgomerie (84), 17th B Kiradech Aphibarneyrat (85), 18th Dick Faldo (86), 19th B Ford Funk and 20th Lewis Oosthuizen (89) and 21st Karrie White (97).

Match 7 Championship Match - Davidson Love def. Danny White Shark 4 & 3.  As surely as night follows day (or day follows night?) hot favourite Davidson Love today claimed an unprecedented 5th Match Play Championship title and in the process created further club history by winning the coveted calendar year golf majors clean sweep.  The gallant challenger was reasonably placed only 2 down after 13, but lost the next two holes to finish the match at the 15th hole.

2018 .... 17 starters teed up for the November 11 Don Lane Invitational, a stableford qualifying round, and those through to the match play rounds were Davidson Love III (25pts), Dick Faldo (23), Notah Kelly (22), Garry Mize (21), Thongchai JD (21), Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson (20), Tubby Waldorf (19) and Kenny Crenshaw (19).

The emergencies, in order, were Hunter Meehan (18), Soldier Montgomerie (16), Java Haas (14), Bourkie Baird (13), Ralphy McIlroy (12), Karrie White (12), Peard Fulke (12) and, playing with a hired set and becoming the first player drafted under the father/son rule, Lewis Oosthuizen (11).

Results from the first round of match play on November 18 were Match 1 - Kenny Crenshaw def. Davidson Love at the 19th, Match 2 - Garry Mize def. Thongchai JD 7 & 5, Match 3 - Notah Kelly def. Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson 5 & 4 and Match 4 - Dick Faldo def. Tubby Waldorf 1 up.

The semi-final results were Match 5 - Kenny Crenshaw def. Garry Mize 2 up and Match 6 - Notah Kelly def. Dick Faldo 2 up.

Match 7 Championship Match - Kenny Crenshaw won his second Match Play title after defeating Notah Kelly 5 & 4.  The match never reached any great heights after Crenshaw cruised to a lead of 4 up after 7 holes.  So complete and one-sided was the victory, former President Seve Hemosteros left the presentation area early and to attend the Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory soccer match.  "It couldn't be any worse than the crap served up today," opined the harsh critic of the club's playing standard.

2017 Match Play finalists Java Haas and Kenny Crenshaw

2017 .... 19 starters teed up for the November 12 Don Lane Invitational, a stroke qualifying round, and the 8 best scores through to the match play rounds were Notah Kelly III (69 nett), Tubby Waldorf (69), Sir Dick Faldo (71), Kipper Parnevik (72), Kenny Crenshaw (76), Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson (77), Ford Funk (79) and Java Haas (80).  Ford Funk withdrew from the match play rounds and was replaced by Karrie White (80).

The 10 remaining emergencies were Boo Boo Weekley (80), Davidson Love III (80), Garry Mize (81), Seve Hemosteros (82), Ralphy McIlroy (86), Grantief Goosen (89), Soldier Montgomerie (89), Paulking Harrington (90), Muzzy Zoeller (93) and Bourkie Baird (94).

Results from the November 19 Round of 8 were Match 1 - Karrie White def. Notah Kelly 2 up, Match 2 - Kenny Crenshaw def. Kipper Parnevik 6 & 5, Match 3 - Dick Faldo def. Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson 4 & 3 and Match 4 - Java Haas def. Tubby Waldorf 4 & 2 which means 3 of the top 4 stroke qualifiers were knocked out in week 1.

The semi-finals were played on Saturday, November 25, and results were Match 5 - Kenny Crenshaw def. Karrie White 4 & 2 and Match 6 - Java Haas def. Dick Faldo 2 up.

Match 7 Championship Match - At his 29th attempt, Java Haas finally raised the Reschs jug after knocking off Kenny Crenshaw 2 up.  Java never fell behind all day and Kenny worked hard to keep himself in the match.  A very close contest but like last year's final, the standard of golf left Seve Hemosteros exasperated yet again.

2016 .... 17 starters teed up for the stableford qualifier on Sunday, November 6th, and the 8 top scorers through to the match play rounds were Bourkie Baird (22pts), Danny White Shark (21), Muzzy Zoeller, Bluey Dunk, Tubby Waldorf and Grantief Goosen (20), Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson and Soldier Montgomerie (18).

The 9 emergencies, in order, were Peard Fulke, Notah Kelly III, Ford Funk (17), Java Haas (16), Karrie White (15), Seve Hemosteros (14), Dick Faldo, Garry Mize (13) and Davidson Love III (11).

Tubby Waldorf dropped out after qualifying day and was replaced by the first available reserve, Karrie White.  Results from the November 13 Round of 8 were Match 1 - Bourkie Baird def. Karrie White 2 & 1, Match 2 - Grantief Goosen def. Bluey Dunk 3 & 2, Match 3 - Muzzy Zoeller def. Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson 2 & 1 and Match 4 - Soldier Montgomerie def. Danny White Shark 2 & 1.

Results of the midweek semi-finals were Match 5 - Bourkie Baird def. Grantief Goosen 1 up and Match 6 - Muzzy Zoeller def. Soldier Montgomerie 2 up.

Match 7 Championship Match - Muzzy Zoeller def. Bourkie Baird 3 & 2 in the Championship Match and becomes the 18th individual winner of The Championship in the past 19 years (Kipper Parnevik is the only repeat winner in that period).  Zoeller led 1 up after 9 before racing to 4 up after 12, Baird righted the ship momentarily, winning two of the next 3 holes to give himself an outside chance of victory before Zoeller sealed the deal at the 16th.

Match referee, Seve Hemosteros, was left almost speechless by the inconsistent standard of play.  "It's really hard to find the appropriate words to describe what I've just witnessed.  We need, as an organisation and as individuals, to visit the room of mirrors and have a good, long, hard look at ourselves."

2015 .... 17 starters teed up for the stroke qualifier on Sunday, November 15th, and the 8 top scorers through to the match play rounds were Grantief Goosen (nett 71), Kenny Crenshaw (72), Danny White Shark (73), Cavey Pavin and Kipper Parnevik (75), Seve Hemosteros and Garry Mize (76) and Ralphy McIlroy (77).

The 9 emergencies, in order, were Bluey Dunk (77), Sir Dick Faldo (78), Hunter Meehan (81), Muzzy Zoeller and Davidson Love III (82), Henney Stenson and Karrie White (84), Java Hass (86) and Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson (95).

Results from the November 22 Round of 8 were Match 1 - Grantief Goosen def. Ralphy McIlroy 4 & 3, Match 2 - Cavey Pavin def. Kipper Parnevik 3 & 1, Match 3 - Seve Hemosteros def. Danny White Shark at the 22nd and Match 4 - Kenny Crenshaw def. Garry Mize 2 & 1.

Results of the November 27 semi-finals were Match 5 (2.30pm) - Grantief Goosen def. Cavey Pavin 3 & 2 and Match 6 - Kenny Crenshaw def. Seve Hemosteros 3 & 2.

Grantief Goosen def. Kenny Crenshaw 4 & 3 in the Championship Match.  He becomes the 17th individual winner of The Championship in the past 18 years.

Whoever parred the opening holes won although Kenny's birdie later on was only good for a half with Grant receiving a shot on that hole.  Grant got out to a 5 hole lead after 10 and Kenny did well to pull back a few after crossing the road.  With no margin for error, Kenny was put to the sword at the 15th, scene of Boo Boo Weekley's 2014 victory.

Congratulations to Grantief on a fine campaign with his putting being an amazing revelation this tournament.  As beaten semi-finalist Cavey Pavin would attest, a previous Achilles heel has become a strength.  Kenny continues to play quality golf at both tournaments but the handicapper maybe slowly catching up with his efforts.

2014 .... 25 starters teed up for the stableford qualifier on Sunday, November 16th, and the 8 top scorers through to the match play rounds were Notah Kelly III 28pts, Java Haas (25), Seve Hemosteros (24), Sir Dick Faldo and Soldier Montgomerie (23), Garry Mize and Boo Boo Weekley (22) and Dave Ford (21).

The 17 emergencies, in order, were last year's champion, Bourkie Baird and Peard Fulke (20), Davidson Love III and Muzzy Zoeller (19), Danny White Shark, TC Choi and Tubby Waldorf (17), Karrie White, Kenny Crenshaw and Edwardo Romero (16), Ralphy McIlroy, Bluey Dunk, Grantief Goosen and Kipper Parnevik (15), Jose-Mumma Olazabal and Henney Stenson (14) and a distinguished last, Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson (12).

Results from the November 28 semi-finals were Match 5 - Sir Dick Faldo def. Ford Funk (+1) 4 & 3 and Match 6 - Boo Boo Weekley (+15) def. Seve Hemosteros 7 & 5.

Boo Boo Weekley (+3) defeated Sir Dick Faldo 4 & 3 in the Championship Match.  The much loved Como Homo withstood a blistering start by the 2000 champion who opened up a 3 hole lead early on.  The turning point probably came at the 7th when Sir Dick, under the pump on the hole, sunk a monster putt to place the pressure back on Boo Boo.  He responded with a sensational long range putt to square the hole and stopped Dick getting out to a unassailable lead.

It was also at this point, a number of Boo Boo's supporters sought refuge at the 19th hole and he was finally able to shake the incessant advice he was being overfed by a motley collection of non-qualifiers.  Like the fabled Cooks River, when the tide turns in a match, it turns quickly.  From 3 down early, Boo Boo had a 3 hole lead when they stepped onto the 15th tee.  His 5-iron finished a match-ending foot from the hole.  Dick went through the motions for a par before Boo Boo sunk his birdie putt to become the club's 20th individual Match Play Champion.

2013 .... 19 starters teed up for the stableford qualifier on Sunday, October 20th, and the 16 top scorers through to the match play rounds were Notah Kelly III 25pts, Hunter Meehan (25), Tubby Waldorf, Sir Dick Faldo and Soldier Montgomerie (23), Kenny Crenshaw (22), Henney Stenson, Davidson Love III, Grant Goosen, Duke Donald and Bourkie Baird (19), Java Haas, Peard Fulke and Ralphy McIlroy (18), Per-Ulrik Fatcatsson (16) and Edwardo Romero (15).  The 3 emergencies were Danny White Shark (14), Karrie White (11) and Kipper Parnevik (9).

Results from the semi-finals were Match 13 - Peard Fulke def. Notah Kelly III (+17) 6 & 5 and Match 14 - Bourkie Baird (+1) def. Hunter Meehan 5 & 3.

The result from the November 24 Final was Match 15 - Bourkie Baird (+7) def. Peard Fulke 3 & 1.  Bourkie started as an underdog in each of his four matches (versus Kenny Crenshaw, Tubby Waldorf, Hunter Meehan and Peard) but his game improved markedly as he progressed through the tournament and he is a more than worthy champion in our silver anniversary year.  12 months of heartbreak for our runner-up who is now seeking professional help on the mental aspects of his game after failing to "seal the deal" here and at the World Series.

Congratulations to members Danny White Shark and Peard Fulke who played their 10th Match Play Championship this year, although their significant milestones pale somewhat when measured against Java Haas's achievement of teeing up in his 50th consecutive major.

Match 15.  In the Championmship Match on a brutally hot R&A Sunday, Kipper Parnevik (+3) def. Grantief Goosen (12) 6 & 5.  Kipper won the first and never relinquished the lead.  He was 4 up after 9 and then won three of the next four holes to end the match at the 13th.  Spectators were filthy - not only was the crowd favourite whipped, but the match ended at the most distant point on the course from the clubhouse.

The Championship Match, Match 15, saw Peard Fulke (11) defeat Karrie White (11) 4 & 3.  Fulke, the warm favourite, took control early and lead by 4 after 5 holes. Karrie won the 7th, 8th and 9th to build some momentum going into the back 9 but smacking his tee shots on 10 and 13 into the water killed off any chance of a comeback.  Mr Fulke becomes the 5th player, along with Tubby Waldorf, Tack Nicklaus, Kipper Parnevik and Notah Kelly III, to record home and away championship wins.

Match 15 saw Kenny Crenshaw (13) snuff out the youthful challenger, Boo Boo Weekley (16), 3 & 1. In sweltering conditions, the experienced Crenshaw opened with a blitz attack, winning five of the first seven holes to effectively end the contest at the short break. Boo Boo's performance improved after the interval, whittling away at the lead, and he kept the match going to the 17th hole. Mr Crenshaw is the first recipient of the Stephen Angry Anderson Match Play Championship trophy, presented in memory of someone who had two key attributes we all admired - he was a good bloke and an average golfer.

Both finalists were a little off their game in Match 15, Vijay into the Cooks with his drive on the first and conceding the Par 3 second after having a one putt quadruple bogey.  Edwardo (aka The Prince) gladly accepted these gifts and then extended his lead to be 6 up after nine holes.  Vijay chipped in on ten and won one of the next two to give himself an outside chance but The Prince made the most of his handicap advantage on 13 by putting his tee shot on the green and going 5 up with 5 to play.  Vijay conceded the 14th hole to hand The Prince the first of what will undoubtedly be his only major win.

As Juan Antonio might have said of the Dunk-Nicklaus decider, "The best final of them all."  Well, maybe a slight exaggeration, but an enthralling contest nonetheless.  Match 15 was a seesawing affair, Bluey won the first, halved the next 4, then lost the 6th and 7th to go 1 down.  He won the 8th, halved the 9th, and lost the 10th to again go 1 down.  He won the 11th, halved the 12th and lost the 13th to be yet again at 1 down - a delicate position with 5 to play.  Tack, with shots left on holes 16 and 18, lost 14 and 15, to go 1 down.  Bluey put himself in the Champions seat by winning the 16th, going 2 up with two to play.  With the pressure mounting, both players carefully avoided the water hazard on 17 by hitting their tee shots to the 9th fairway and then chipping back over the tree line.  Bluey hit the green with his third shot but Tack's reply went through the green into the rough.  Tack, needing to win the hole to keep the match alive, duffed his chip shot and eventually conceded the hole to give Bluey his first major victory.

2004 .... After extensive consultation with senior players and the stamp of approval from officials at the R &A, the decision was made to alter the format of the Match Play Championship.  Qualifying day is now an all-in stableford event with the top 16 scorers progressing to the match play rounds.

For those that remember an epic clash, think of the 1981 NSWRL Grand Final when the Jets were stiffed on the bell.  Match 15 was yet another high-quality game from this years Championship, Davidson Love III won the 18th hole to finish 1 up over the 50-something former Jets star, Kenny Crenshaw.  For many in the large gallery, this was the highest standard final of them all.  Not only the closeness of the match - no more than one hole's difference at any stage - but the almost complete lack of mishits until nerves set in at the 16th hole.  Congratulations to Davidson, now a 4-time Champion (previously 1989, 1991 and 1994) but the victory comes with a sting in the tail - he loses 6 shots for next years event!  Commiserations to Kenny who put up a gallant fight but was probably let down over the concluding holes by his womanly putting.  He loses 3 shots.

The Championship Match, played on Sunday November 23rd, proved yet again that the old adage about weight stopping a train was correct.  In Match 15 Shigeki Moroneyama triumphed 5 and 3 over Garry Mize in a typical finals match.  Shigeki was never headed, leading by one hole at the turn and winning four of the next six holes to finish the contest at the 15th.

Match 15, held on Sunday October 21, was a high quality final with the battle hardened Ford Funk claiming his first major.  Ford Funk (12) def. Sergio Grasscia (7) 2 up.

Match 15, held on Sunday October 17, was the most lopsided final of the millennium.  Soldier Montgomerie destroyed Fatcatsson 8 and 7.  Per-Ulrik offered no excuses and put half his prizemoney on the bar as some consolation for the spectators.

1998 .... 19 players gathered for battle on Sunday October 4th.  All starters were accommodated by the new tournament format.

Semi-finals (Saturday October 17) results were Match 13 - Bluey Dunk (12) def. Cavey Pavin (14) 1 up and Match 14 - Costantino Blocker (26) def. Hal Whitton (6) 1 up.

The Championship Match, held on Sunday October 18, gave Costantino Blocker his first major, defeating Bluey Dunk.  All square after 15 holes, Bluey lost the 16th hole through a disqualification.  In a gesture of good sportsmanship, Costantino Blocker replayed the hole and won it, squared the 17th, and won the 18th with a 6 (net 5) to Bluey's 7 for a 2 up win in Match 15.

1997 .... With 18 starters, the tournament commenced on Friday October 3rd with two play-off games - Hunter Meehan (8) and Costantino Blocker (26) defeated Davidson Love III (9) and Tack Nicklaus (19) 6 and 5 respectively.

The Championship Match (Sunday October 19) saw Vijay Field beat Dick Faldo 4 and 3.  At the end of nine very competitive holes, Dick was 1 up with no inkling of the devastation that lay ahead.  Vijay Field stepped up a gear playing the next 6 holes in 4 over, and Match 15 was over.
